Worth knowing
What grinding removes, and what it leaves in the ground
Grinding is not extraction, and the difference matters more on a slope than on a flat lawn. A wheel cuts the stump and the surface roots into chips down to somewhere between a few inches and about a foot below the surface. Everything deeper stays exactly where it is and rots over the following years. On a level garden that is simply the cheaper, faster answer. On a graded bank it is also the better one, because pulling a whole root plate out of fill takes away part of what is holding the bank together. Full excavation is for ground about to be built on or regraded.

The work
Around this county it generally runs $2 to $5 for each inch of stump diameter, measured across the widest point at ground level, with a minimum charge for a single small stump. Dense oak and hickory sit at the upper end.
Usually a few inches to about a foot below the surface, which is enough for turf, a bed or a post. If something with a footing is going in, say so and we will go deeper or recommend digging it out instead.
Not from a ground stump. What is left is dead and rots in place over several years. A few species send up suckers from the roots afterwards, which is a mowing job rather than a returning tree.
Not straight into fresh chips, which lock up nitrogen while they break down. Either dig the chips out and put soil back, or plant a few feet to one side of where the stump was.
Your choice. The chips can go back in, which settles over a season, or they can leave with us and you fill it with topsoil. Tell us which when we quote so the right truck turns up.

Afterwards
No, they are quoted separately because they are separate machines and separate visits in some cases. Plenty of people take one and not the other.
Often, and on a slope that is the real question rather than the stump itself. Give us the narrowest point on the route, including any step or gate post, and we will tell you honestly.
Density. Oak and hickory are harder on the teeth and slower to cut than a pine stump of the same width, so the same measurement takes longer to get through.
Always, before anything spins. It is the step that protects your irrigation, your fencing and occasionally something considerably more expensive.
Grinding deals with the stump and the surface roots near it. Roots that have already lifted a slab are a different conversation and usually a paving one rather than a tree one.
